So far the second annual NCAA college football playoffs in it's current 12 team state is doing everything a playoff should do. It's producing instant classics as well as upsets and surprises. For way too long the NCAA fought like hell to keep the Bowl Championship Series because for them it was basically a cash grab errrr I mean a way to culminate the season. However, every other legitimate sport's season culminates with a playoff and a National Championship. The BCS did that but it was usually decided behind closed doors and the smaller conferences had basically no shot to get into the title game...this format is so much better. Let teams play the game to decide the National Championship...what a concept!
We have reached the Final Four or the semifinals as they're calling it. Oregon vs Indiana and Ole Miss vs Miami. Each team had their own journey to get to the final four.
No. 5 Oregon: Did not have a bye in this tournament. They had to beat No. 12 James Madison and No. 4 Texas Tech to reach the semifinals.
No. 6 Ole Miss: Did not have a bye in this tournament. They had to beat No. 11 Tulane and No. 3 Georgia
No. 10 Miami: Did not have a bye in this tournament. They had to beat No. 7 Texas A&M and No. 2 Ohio State
No. 1 Indiana Did have a bye in this tournament...They had to beat No. 9 Alabama to reach the semifinals...
I didn't mention the other teams that did have a bye...Texas Tech, Georgia, and Ohio State. I did a report a long time ago about how I think the bye hurts a team more than it helps. I mean sure the injured players can rest up and have an extra week to get healthy, but the bye totally kills any momentum you have as a team on a winning streak or just playing in general.
Miami vs Ohio State was a great game despite Miami jumping out to a 14 point lead in the game. You just knew Ohio State was going to try to mount a comeback...they're way too good not too, but Miami held on and handed a stunned Ohio State team it's second loss of the season and eliminated last year's National Champion.
Ole Miss and Georgia played an absolute classic. A back and forth battle that resulted in a 39-34 win for Ole Miss.
The other two games were not evenly matched it seems...Oregon shut out Texas Tech 23-0 and Indiana almost shut out Alabama 38-3.
See, this is what I mean when I say the bye week is overrated. This is probably why in the NFL the Philadelphia Eagles choked away the No. 2 seed with a loss this afternoon to the Washington Commanders...now they'll have to face the 49ers next week but at least they'll have momentum!
